He served as the Mayor of Bissau, until he was named as the Minister of Finance of Guinea Bissau in 2009. Following the 2012 coup he fled the country.

Jose Mario Vaz ran in the 2014 Presidential Elections and defeated the candidate preferred by the military in a run-off.
