Her involvement in politics began in the 1960's during her student years. In 1975 her family was assassinated during a coup d'état, this lead her to pursue her political career because she could take her father's place as the head of the Bangladesh Awami League.

Sheikh Hasina played an important role during the military regime of General Hossain Mohammad Ershad, as she assembled the opposition parties against the government and called for fair elections. She became Prime Minister for the first time in 1996, a post she would hold until 2001. Even after 5 years of rule, Bangladesh was still considered one of the most, if not the most corrupt country in the world, which was seen as a major failure of her rule. Following her rule she was accused of several criminal charges, all of which were dropped.

Sheikh Hasina ran in the 2008 election, and won by a wide margin. Sheikh Hasina was re-elected in 2014 for a third term.
