Biography:


Ashraf Ghani was born in Logar, Afghanistan in 1949 Ashraf Ghani studied at the American University of Beirut and obtained a Doctorate degree at Columbia University. Ashraf Ghani had a distinguished career teaching at several universities in the United States and also at Kabul University where he eventually became Chancellor of the University.

Following the United States intervention in Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani returned to Afghanistan in 2001 and served as former President Hamid Karzai advisor. Ashraf Ghani also served as the Finance Minister of Afghanistan from 2002 to 2004, until he became the Chancellor of Kabul University. Ashraf Ghani ran in the 2009 Afghan Presidential Elections but finished fourth with only 3% of the vote, however these elections were heavily critized as being unfair.

Ashraf Ghani ran in the 2014 Afghan Presidential elections in which he won a run-off against Abdullah Abdullah. There were however some concerns over electoral fraud and in order to avoid a confrontation with his opponent, Ashraf Ghani offered his opponent a position as the Prime Minister of Afghanistan which Abdullah Abdullah accepted.

Biography:


Hamid Karzai was born near Kandahar in 1957, his family were voiced supporters of King Zahir Shah. Hamid Karzai studied Political Science in India. Before becoming president he was involved in the resistance against Soviet Occupation. At first he was supportive of the Taliban and then moved away from them.


Hamid Karzai came in power in 2001 after he was placed into the position of interim president. In 2004 he was elected democratically as the first elected Afghan President. Hamid Karzai is slowly introducing reforms, and the economy is growing steadily. However, recently some controversial laws were proposed that would affect women's rights, and Karzai received much criticism from his international allies. Hamid Karzai again made the news in 2010, when he criticized his Western allies and suggested he might just join the Taliban, if he doesn't get his way.

The elections in 2009 were widely criticized for being unfair and rigged in favor of Karzai, hurting the credibility of his government.

Following his two terms as the President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai, stepped down on September 29th 2014.
